Peru

A former Spanish colony, Peru has been independent since 1824. A typical South American dictatorship governed the country until the arrival of democracy in 1981. Peru is said to be the world’s riskiest country to do business in. Internal unrest, epidemics and nature are all blamed! Anti-government guerrilla activity, which was prominent in the late 80’s and early 90’s has now subsided. 85% of Peruvians are affiliated with the Catholic Church.

Present Work

Operation World (1993) estimated that there were over 1,000 Protestant missionaries working in Peru. Currently there are 26 Brethren workers based in Lima, Cajamarca, Ica, Pucallpa, Puerto Maldonaldo, Trujillo. They are involved in:

Church planting and evangelism

Support of churches through running training conferences, Bible

teaching and pastoral work

Needs

Current needs are for Bible teachers who have lots of patience and are humble, willing to learn from and to serve the Peruvians. They need to be able to adapt to the very different culture

Qualifications are of immense benefit, particularly some form of Bible training

before leaving for the field
