Germany has been at the centre of many major events in the 20th century. The human tragedies of two world wars will always stand out but so, too, will the momentous events that saw the destruction of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of Communism. Now Germany sits at the centre of Europe and is key to the success of the new Euro-zone. Germany also has a long and involved Christian history and today remains nominally Christian with equal Protestant and Catholic groupings. As in most European countries, the 1990’s saw a mass exodus from the pews of the established church.
Present Work
During the Cold War, Germany was used as a base for many missionaries who worked behind the Iron Curtain. Germany herself is now a sending nation, with considerable numbers of missionaries in many parts of the world. Those who continue to serve the country, work with ethnic minorities (such as the large population of Turks), and with ministries serving Eastern European nations.
Needs
More than 3,000 missionaries from all branches of the evangelical church have been sent from Germany. Wiedenest, the German Brethren service grouphave over 150 missionaries working around the world.
The main role for any non-German would be in specific ethnic ministries.
