Argentina is known for Maradona, Evita, and Falkland Islands, and the tango. Although the country has had a history of misrule and poor government since independence from Spain, in recent years there has been improved political and economic stability. High standards of living are being eroded by high inflation and increasing unemployment. While Catholicism is the official religion, recent governments have declared total freedom of conscience, although there is still prejudice against Protestants. This is heightened by the fast growing sects like Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses. Backsliding has sadly offset the growth in evangelical numbers.
